February 6th, 2012 EAN _NORM Workshop on "Measurement strategies in NORM", call for papers
Since categorizing and radiological assessment of NORM are major duties of radiation protection officers and the basis for any work activity with NORM, special attention has to be paid to it. In this context, measurements have to be carried out to analyse the radionuclide content of NORM and the relevant parameters of the exposure pathways which have to be taken into account for both, the employees and the public. The applied measurement strategies must comply with quite diverse radionuclide compositions of NORM and different types of NORM (e.g. scale, bulk material, dust). In practice, different measuring equipments and methods are used. Some of them have been discussed in former EAN_NORM workshops, but further exchange of experiences is desired among the members of EAN_NORM and other experts. To provide a platform for it, we are organizing the 5th EAN_NORM workshop on "Measurement strategies in NORM" from December 4th – 6th 2012 in Dresden (Dorint Hotel). Focusing on practical exercises in round table manner, special practical sessions will be held. Thereby, the in-situ measurement of different geometries (e.g. barrel, marinelli beaker, pile, filter) and different NORM nuclide vectors using various measuring devices will be carried out. An exhibition of measurement devices will complete this practical session. Presently we are preparing the scientific program and kindly ask for your collaboration. Release of the 3rd EAN-NORM questionnaire

within the next month, IAF – Radioökologie GmbH plans to assess the situation on radiation protection within the NORM industry to provide further information for the EAN-NORM community and to support the work of all of us. For that purpose we have compiled a

"On the current status of radiation protection in NORM-industries".

EAN _NORM Workshop on Exposure Scenarios, call for papers

The legal basis for radiation protection in the EU member states still have differences and we are far away from harmonization. This also applies to the approach to estimate the doses for both the employees and the public. During the 2 ^nd workshop of the EAN _NORM , examples of the different approaches to identify the major exposure pathways and to assess the exposures have been in the focus of several presentations and discussions. There has been raised the suggestion to have more intensive discussions on that topics in order to increase the understanding among the experts for the different approaches and to discuss the question whether a harmonization of the approach should be pursued even with all its consequences as an target. It seems that the discussion can be held within a special workshop.

Against this background, we took up this proposal and are willing to organize a "Workshop on Scenarios for Dose Assessments in the NORM industry" . This workshop can be held in November 2010 in Dresden. However, we are open for other suggestions/proposals.
We would prepare a scientific program and kindly ask you for collaboration. In addition we are looking for presentations and other documents describing examples of exposure scenarios, pathways and parameters applied for dose assessments in the NORM industry. It is planned to prepare a comprehensive basis for the discussions.
Furthermore, we are willing to prepare a status report on the topics and results of the workshop. This report is supposed to be submitted at the EAN _NORM web-page and to the "Article 31 Group of Experts".

Request of the EAN Working Group on ALARA culture

Dear colleagues,

the EAN Working Group on ALARA culture made a request to EANNORM and asked for some collaboration concerning the following 2 tasks:

The EAN Working Group on ALARA Culture discussed in its meeting in Rome last October, among other topics, how the ALARA concept is applied in different areas. It was decided to get some input from the cooperating partners: EFOMP, ESR, EFRS, EFNDT and from our other ALARA networks: NORM-Net, ERPAN, EMAN.
Question to you: How is the ALARA principle implemented in practice in your field? Please consult you colleagues and use the EAN _NORM forum to send your statements and/or examples before 1st of June 2010.

Below you will also find a proposal of a short definition of the ALARA approach to radiation protection culture. If you have any comments on this, please use the EAN _NORM forum .

EAN Proposal: Definition of the ALARA Approach to Radiation Protection Culture *

Based on scientific knowledge and characterised by risk awareness , optimisation of radiation protection is an ongoing and iterative process, to keep

- the magnitude of individual doses,
- the number of people exposed and
- the likelihood of potential exposure ALARA,

taking into account technical, economic and societal developments, requiring qualitative and quantitative judgements and involving all parties having an interest in or concern about an exposure situation.

The implementation of the ALARA approach in practice is the most important element of radiation protection culture because of the linear no threshold dose-effect relationship (LNT), new findings of new health effects due to ionising radiation, and the application of the precautionary principle.

The implementation requires an adequate number of well trained and experienced radiation protection specialists familiar with the ALARA principle and associated procedures and ready to spread the ALARA culture within their field of activities.

As we have been informed by the EAN Working Group on ALARA culture, the results of the discussions will be presented to IRPA to support their activities to develop guiding principles on radiation protection culture.
